The Genre of Stokers Dracula Essay - 6296 Words
This is almost like an epic poem. The theme in this case is of good versus evil. The evil has almost supernatural powers yet the good triumph over it. The good consists of ordinary men, god fearing and courageous. They are consistent in their effort to stamp out evil. In the end they triumph over evil even though the evil is very strong. This theme slowly and steadily gathers momentum until it becomes clearer in the end. In Dracula, Bram Stoker emphasizes how as the daylight ends, the horror begins, for from the depths of the swirling mist, he (Dracula) appears, his pointed teeth gleaming as he edges towards his victims. This is Count Dracula the King of the Un- dead - the dreaded vampire.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Yet, Stoker does not show real sex, there is no lovemaking. Stokerà ®Ã¢â¬âà ¸ genius was to develop a coded eroticism covering it in the supernatural, and then shrug off all social responsibility by obliterating the authorà ®Ã¢â¬âà ¸ voice. 1. Introduction In this paper I will examine Stokerà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ²s novel Dracula in order to determine whether it belongs to the Gothic genre or not. Firstly, a short history of the Gothic novel will be presented and the most important authors and works of the era will be mentioned. Furthermore, the different characteristics of the Gothic genre will be examined in order to compare them with Stokerà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ²s work. Aspects like nature, surroundings, atmosphere, the role of the women in the Gothic novel, the Gothic villain, will be compared with the elements found in Dracula. Another question that will have to be answered is, what makes Gothic novels so attractive. The breaking of certain taboos is essential to accomplish this atmosphere of danger and fear, and it will be examined whether Dracula contains any of these elements. There also appear certain features and fears connected to the Victorian era such as loss of the Empire; invasion from a foreign land; degeneration of t he stock; the constant development of science and its influence on religion; the attitude of the Victorian society towards eroticism. It will be examined whether StokerShow MoreRelatedTexts Can Be Modified or Appropriated to Suit Different Audiences or Purposes, Yet Still Remain Firmly Within the Genre. Face of Bravery (Revised) free essay sample
ââ¬Å"My parents are freaking outâ⬠¦ but Iââ¬â¢m fine.â⬠These are the words of my best friend just after being told she had a brain tumor. The tumor began growing off of the Schwann cells of her facial and hearing nerve, inside of the innermost ear and brain. The tumor was slowly growing into her brain stem. According to her, the tumor was benign but the doctor warned of malignancy. Upon hearing the news I was utterly shocked, terrified, and fascinated by the science of it all at once. My best friend, my partner in crime did not, could not have a tumor. I knew immediately I needed to be calm and collected for her sake (and mine). At first I was dumbfounded at her apparent indifference towards the whole situation. She made fun of her newly deaf left ear and shrugged off any sort of condolence. It was not until later that she told me of countless nights spent crying herself to sleep, hating her new post surgical, half-paralyzed face, resenting her pain and terrified that it would never go away. We will write a custom essay sample on Face of Bravery (Revised) or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I, too, found myself awake at night asking why bad things happen to great peopleâ⬠¦ I never did resolve that question. One Spring day, half a year after her multiple procedures and recovery, Kathryn told me that I would always be her best friend and thanked me for being with her from the beginning. I left my childhood behind that day. Before the diagnosis, I found myself constantly traveling lifeââ¬â¢s straightest paths I was afraid of taking chances and deviating from the norm. I was unknowingly drowning in routine, a child taking my greatest gifts for granted. I was blind to the fact that I was (and still am) blessed. I complained about trivial things, isolated myself in my room each night, slaving away over math problems and writing prompts. I rarely enjoyed the company of my family. In fact, it seemed the only communication I had with them was about schoolwork. This changed in a way that I could never have imagined. After that fateful October day, I saw everything in a different light. I found myself sacrificing precious time to talk to and check up on Kathryn. I would visit her as much as I could and direct all of my energy towards making her laugh. Gradually, I began to see the value of family again. After all, no one is guaranteed escape from tragedy. Slowly my life began to shape into something that w as fulfilling, rather than simply successful. Soon enough, I was not merely going through the motions, I was participating in real life. Kathryn taught me to live each day and appreciate it. Now I feel as if I should be thanking Kathryn. It was Kathryn who came to mind when I joined a Special Olympics swim team to teach and assist the special needs participants. In the end I learned humanity, teamwork, and the powerful bonds that can form between people who are striving towards the same goal. When I founded my reading group ââ¬Å"Teens to Totsâ⬠, I pictured the light of bright futures gleaming in the childrenââ¬â¢s eyes. I saw just that because my focus was no longer on me alone. There is nothing more fulfilling than fostering the growth of lifetime readers and ultimately, learners. I am no longer afraid to take chances, to walk upon a stage for the first time in my life and perform in front of hundreds of people (dressed as Willy Wonka himself), to surround myself with those people I care for the most, all the while becoming an individual who knows what he wants and will strive in all of his academic and extracurricular endeavors to achieve his dreams. Indeed, it is Kathrynââ¬â¢s circumstances that changed me. But it is me that confidently walks into the warm and bright light of adulthood.

Permit to Work Systems free essay sample
A permit-to-work system is a formal written system used to control certain types of work that are potentially hazardous. A permit-to-work is a document which specifies the work to be done and the precautions to be taken. Permits-to-work form an essential part of safe systems of work for many maintenance activities. They allow work to start only after safe procedures have been defined and they provide a clear record that all foreseeable hazards have been considered. A permit is needed when maintenance work can only be carried out if normal safeguards are dropped or when new hazards are introduced by the work. Examples are, entry into vessels, hot work and pipeline breaking. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? An HSE survey showed that a third of all accidents in the chemical industry were maintenance-related, the largest single cause being a lack of, or deficiency in, permit-to-work systems. In a study of small and medium-sized chemical factories: I two-thirds of companies were not checking systems adequately; I two-thirds of permits did not adequately identify potential hazards; I nearly half dealt poorly with isolation of plant, electrical equipment, etc; I a third of permits were unclear on what personal protective clothing was needed; I a quarter of permits did not deal adequately with formal hand-back of plant once maintenance work had finished; I in many cases little thought had been given to permit form design. We will write a custom essay sample on Permit to Work Systems or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page While aimed primarily at the chemical industry the guidance provided may have application in other industries. 2 WHAT DO I NEED TO DO? Donââ¬â¢t assume that your system is a good one just because you have not yet had a serious accident. You should critically review your system and ask yourself the following questions. Information I Is the permit-to-work system fully documented, laying down: how the system works; the jobs it is to be used for; the responsibilities and training of those involved; and how to check its operation? I Is there clear identification of who may authorise particular jobs (and any limits to their authority)? I Is there clear identification of who is responsible for specifying the necessary precautions (eg isolation, emergency arrangements, etc)? I Is the permit form clearly laid out? I Does it avoid statements or questions which could be ambiguous or misleading? I Is it designed to allow for use in unusual circumstances? I Does it cover contractors? 3 Selection and training I Are those who issue permits sufficiently knowledgeable concerning the hazards and precautions associated with the plant and proposed work? Do they have the imagination and experience to ask enough ââ¬Ëwhat ifââ¬â¢ questions to enable them to identify all potential hazards? I Do staff and contractors fully understand the importance of the permit-to-work system and are they trained in its use? Description of the work I Does the permit clearly identify the work to be done and the associated hazards? I Can plans and diagrams be used to assist in the description of the work to be done, its location and limitations? I Is the plant adequately identified, eg by discrete number or tag to assist issuers and users in correctly taking out and following permits? I Is a detailed work method statement given for more complicated tasks? Hazards and precautions I Does the system require the removal of hazards and, where this is not reasonably practicable, effective control? Are the requirements of The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999 (COSHH) and other relevant legislation known and followed by those who issue the permits? I Does the permit state the precautions that have been taken and those that are needed while work is in progress? For instance, are isolations specified and is it clear what personal protective equipment should be used? I Do the precautions cover residual hazards and those that might be introduced by the work, eg welding fume and vapour from cleaning solvents? 4 I Do the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 apply? If so, has a full risk assessment identified the significant risks and identified alternative methods of working or necessary precautions? Procedures I Does the permit contain clear rules about how the job should be controlled or abandoned in the case of an emergency? I Does the permit have a hand-back procedure incorporating statements that the maintenance work has finished and that the plant has been returned to production staff in

Excited State Definition in Chemistry
Excited State Definition in Chemistry The excited state describes an atom, ion or molecule with an electron in a higher than normal energy level than its ground state. The length of time a particle spends in the excited state before falling to a lower energy state varies. Short duration excitation usually results in release of a quantum of energy, in the form of a photon or phonon. The return to a lower energy state is called decay. Fluorescence is a fast decay process, while phosphorescence occurs over a much longer time frame. Decay is the inverse process of excitation. An excited state that lasts a long time is called a metastable state. Examples of metastable states are single oxygen and nuclear isomers. Sometimes the transition to an excited state enables an atom to participate in a chemical reaction. This is the basis for the field of photochemistry. Non-Electron Excited States Although excited states in chemistry and physics almost always refer to the behavior of electrons, other types of particles also experience energy level transitions. For example, the particles in the atomic nucleus may be excited from the ground state, forming nuclear isomers.

Rhetorical Analyses - Essay Example To provide a balanced discourse, Featherstone eventually evaluated magazines such as Blue Jean, Teen Voices, Hues and Reluctant Hero that were certified to provide more substantial contents. The rhetorical analysis hereby aims to evaluate Featherstoneââ¬â¢s effectiveness in evaluating the magazines using appeals to ethos, logos, and pathos. The authorââ¬â¢s arguments clearly indicated her preferences for the teen girlsââ¬â¢ reading materials through provision of examples and citing relevant support from identified slogans, celebrities, and choice of feature articles that were believed to evoke the readersââ¬â¢ emotional response. For example, Featherstoneââ¬â¢s assessment of Teen Peopleââ¬â¢s strategies of using celebrities such as Jennifer Love Hewitt by focusing on the actressââ¬â¢ clothes and love life, instead of providing positive information, aim to make readers realize the lack of credible and substantial content that could improve knowledge of girls on mo re crucial matters. Her choices of vocabularies, though, swerve from easy to read to confusing and almost defying logical order ââ¬â which is contrary to using appeals to pathos.
